Our Story

Divers Den Co., Winnipeg’s first facility to train and equip recreational SCUBA divers

In the Beginning

In 1961 Gilbert Lamothe, an electrical mechanic for Air Canada, opened Divers Den Co., Winnipeg’s first facility to train and equip recreational SCUBA divers. Being one of the only certified divers in town, Gil was approached by the city police service to carry out search and recovery jobs in the local waterways and to train police officers as well.

Contractors working on bridges and dams would call him up when things didn’t go as planned or went sideways. The people who hired Gil and his divers soon came to realize that in many cases divers could carry out many tasks “in the wet” and actually get things done quicker with less expense.

The Switch to Commercial

The underwater construction and repair business grew rapidly to a point where Gil decided to leave the sport diving business with a store manager and focus on
commercial diving.

The new company was born and the “Double D” brand from Divers Den was retained and adapted for Dominion Divers. During the 70’s and 80’s, with the construction industry booming, the need for divers to work on dams, bridges, and water treatment facilities in northern communities continued to grow, not to mention the repair work required on the large inventory of older underwater infrastructure in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario.

Gil retired in 2003 and the business was taken over by long serving employees who continue to grow the business.
